Where Adlerians Connect, Learn, and Network

2025

Meeting are held on Zoom the first Saturday of Every Month at 10 am.- 12 pm.Please email us at [email protected] to receive the linkFebruary 7th 2026Grief & Loss - Adlerian StylePresented byChris Garwick-Foley, MA, LPCey, MA, LPCFebruary 7, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. CT on Zoom(Free to attend, all are welcome, & come as you are)About the presentation:Grief is the natural, expected response to any loss, large or small. It becomes complicated grief when its effects last longer than three months following the loss. Alfred Adler saw that grief was an integral part of society and relationships. By understanding the personality (i.e., motivation for behavior, in Adlerian philosophy), one can best understand how to support, and indeed, process the effects of grief on the individual.Goals/Objectives of the Presentation:Participants will learn about the wide scope of events that can create grief.
Participants will learn about the three distinct types of grief.
Participants will learn about the array of things about which people grieve.
Participants will learn about grief behaviors of each personality type, as defined by Adler.
Participants will learn about the continuing effects of grief
About the presenter:Back in the days when electric typewriters were the high-tech method of preparing term papers, and college research was conducted with card files in musty libraries Chris earned her BA in Speech-Communications. During a 20-year period she lovingly refers to as her “past life," she worked in the field of publications marketing. After waking up one morning wondering why she had spent so much time in the field she decided to try to find out, and earned her MA in counseling and psychotherapy from Adler Graduate School.
Changing careers was been one of the best decisions Chris has ever made! Each day she is fascinated, encouraged and energized by the work she is able to do with people who are stuck in their journey and willing to explore the way out.
Currently, Chris has a remote private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Her practice is based on the knowledge that we are all holistic beings with physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions, dynamically interwoven to produce the unique individuals we are. Chris's passion is understanding and promoting the influence of bio-chemistry (nutritional and environmental factors) and physiology on behavior and, conversely, how one's belief systems influence one's physical health. Chris is certified in Interactive Guided Imagery (sm) and Thought Field Therapy. Chris also has additional training in behavioral nutrition, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR ), and NeuroModulation Technique therapy.
Chris and her husband share their lives with four cats, (although the count, according to our most mature “housemate,” is three humans and three cats). They also find joy in their menagerie of urban wildlife who have made their yard home. They feel fortunate to be living in God's Backyard with the western shore of Lake Superior never too far away for a relaxing low-tech respite from big city life.
March 7th 2026Senescing with AdlerPresented by Louise Ferry, PhD, LP, LMFTAlfred Adler developed concepts that are relatable to all no matter what stage of life we might be entering. We are constantly striving towards a “felt plus” as well as away form a “felt minus”. This continues to be present throughout our entire life, even as we are entering those later stages. This workshop will provide information on the changes that take place as we age as well as Adlerian interventions that can be used with those who would be classified as “older” in our society. These interventions are relatable to helping older individuals also to work towards that “felt plus”.Goals of the PresentationDescribe the changes that take place biologically, cognitively, and emotionally as we enter our later years.Describe the various types of dementiaIdentify interventions that we might use with those who are entering this later stage of life in our therapeutic work.Identify Adlerian concepts related to working with those in the later stages of life including using the Crucial Cs.Presenter Biography:
Louise Ferry is a licensed psychologist and licensed marriage and family therapist in Minnesota. She is a board approved supervisor in the Marriage and Family licensure of Minnesota. Louise is semi-retired and works part-time in a behavioral health unit in a local medical facility. She also is an adjunct professor at the Adler Graduate School in Minnesota. Who Is in Control?Sue Pye Brokhaw, November 2025
There are incidents that occur in life over which you have
no control. However, you do have control over what you
do about it. You can decide how to think about it which
results in the feelings that you have about it. You can
decide what to do about it. You can’t change others but
you can change yourself. You can respond in a way that
is useful to yourself and others or in useless ways. You
don’t deserve to experience long term suffering.
Bad things happen and you may be the victim of
wrongdoing. However, you have choices about what you
want to do about it. If you caused it, you could recognize
your mistake, make amends, decide not to make that
mistake again or fix it. If you did no wrong and were an
innocent victim, you can do something about your
response to that experience. Do you want to be stuck in
being a victim or do you want to overcome what has
happened to you and move forward?
First you must acknowledge that regardless of what has
happened, you are a worthwhile person and that will
never change. You are never responsible for what others
do; they are. Behavior is the responsibility of the person
who is behaving or misbehaving. When others hurt you,
what do you decide to do about it? What is the best
solution for you and others who could be victimized?
Can you make something good out of something awful
that has happened? What action can you take. What
can you do to make this a better world so that it won’t
happen to others in the future? What can you do to heal
yourself and move on? You experienced real pain. You
don’t deserve to feel pain in the future because of what
someone else did. The hurt you in the past. Are you
willing to let them keep hurting you? You deserve
better!
Think of the couple that lost their six-year-old son to a
sexual predator. They grieved and then they decided to
start an organization to help find missing children. You
too can make the best out of what was a tragedy.
